(02)Types of logo
Shown with the identity we designed for Repairs Plus.
The five kinds of logo, and which one suits you

WordmarkMost small businesses
Your business name in carefully chosen or drawn lettering. Best when the name is short and people need to remember it, which is most local businesses.
Monogram
Your initials, for square spaces such as a WhatsApp profile picture or an app icon. Usually a partner to a wordmark rather than a replacement.
Symbol
A mark that works without words, like the screw head in the Repairs Plus plus sign. It needs a wordmark beside it until people know you, but it's what shows in a browser tab.
Combination
Name and symbol together, sometimes with a short line. Flexible, because the parts can also be used apart.
Emblem
The name inside a shape, like a badge. Strong on uniforms, signs and packaging; harder to make work very small, so it usually needs a simpler version too.
(03)The size tests
A logo that only works big isn't finished.
Every logo we design passes these tests
The browser tab
Shrunk to a few millimetres across as a website's tab icon, can you still tell what it is? If not, a simpler symbol or monogram does that job.
The van
Read from across a road, on the side of a vehicle that might be moving. Thin letters and long taglines vanish; bold shapes and a short name don't.
The embroidery
Stitched on a polo shirt or a cap, very fine lines and small text fill in and blur. We check the logo still reads when it's simplified for thread.
One colour
In black only, or white only, for stamps, receipts, vinyl lettering and engraving. A logo that relies on colour to make sense fails here.
The profile picture
Cropped into a circle on WhatsApp, Instagram and Google. Anything important near the corners gets cut off.
(04)The files you get
Every package includes the files for every use, so you never have to ask again.
Your logo files, and where each one goes
| Where it's used | File | Why that file |
|---|---|---|
| Signs, vans, printing | SVG and PDF (vector) | Can be scaled to any size without going blurry |
| Website, documents, email | PNG with a transparent background | Sits cleanly on any colour |
| Social media profiles | Square PNG, sized for each platform | Crops neatly into circles and squares |
| Browser tab and phone home screen | Favicon and app icons | The small versions, drawn for small sizes |
| Printers and sign makers | Colour references in HEX, RGB and CMYK | So every supplier matches your colours |
| Dark backgrounds | Reversed and one-colour versions | For shirts, dark vans and night photos |
(05)Your options
There's more than one sensible way to get a logo.
Designer, logo maker or marketplace: an honest comparison
| Online logo maker | Freelance marketplace | A designer or studio (like us) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unique to you | Rarely: built from shared templates | Varies a lot by seller | Yes |
| Thought about your business | No | Sometimes | Yes: we ask before we design |
| Passes the size tests above | Rarely checked | Depends on the seller | Checked on every logo |
| Files for every use | Often extra | Varies | Included |
| You can register it as a trade mark | Hard if others use the same template | Check who owns the rights | Yes, once paid, it's yours |
| See it before you pay | Yes | Usually pay first | Yes |
Logo makers can be fine for a stopgap. If the logo is going on a van, a shopfront or uniforms, it's worth having it designed properly once.

Trade mark basics for a new logo
What registering gets you
A registered UK trade mark gives you the right to stop others using the same or a confusingly similar mark for the same kind of goods or services. You can register your name, your logo, or both.
Search first
Before you settle on a name or logo, search the UK Intellectual Property Office's register for similar marks in your line of business1. It's free, and far cheaper than rebranding later.
Classes
Applications are made in classes of goods and services, such as building services or clothing. You pay for each class you need2.
What it costs
Applying online to the UK IPO costs £205 for one class, plus £60 for each extra class3.
Ownership
Once your logo is paid for, the copyright in the final design is yours, so you can register it in your own name. Our terms say so in writing.

Questions
(10)Questions
Yes, once it's paid for. The final approved design and its artwork are yours, and you can register them as a trade mark. Concepts you didn't choose stay ours.
It depends on how many changes you want. We give you a date for the first design when we agree your brief, in writing, and stick to it.
Yes. Sometimes a logo just needs redrawing so it works small and in one colour; sometimes it needs replacing. See rebranding for how we keep what customers already recognise.
A logo is the mark. A brand is everything that makes you recognisable: the logo, colours, type, how you sound and how it's all used together. Our branding page explains what goes into one.
You can, and for a side project it may be enough. The catches are that the result is built from templates others use too, which can make a trade mark hard to register, and that it's rarely checked at small sizes or in one colour.
