The short answer

A pay monthly website is designed, built, hosted and looked after for one monthly price, instead of a large bill up front. Ours start at £99 a month and include SEO work every month. We build a free preview first, and you only pay once you've approved it, every six months or yearly.

(01)What you pay

Paid every six months or yearly. No build fee, ever.

What the monthly fee pays for, task by task

Design and build

Your site is designed for your business and written around what your customers search for. There is no build fee: the build is paid for through the plan, which is why plans run for at least six months.

Hosting

Fast hosting, the security certificate that puts the padlock in the address bar, and the technical set-up that keeps it all running. You never deal with a hosting company.

Updates and security

We keep everything behind the site up to date and patched, and take backups, so an out-of-date plugin is never the reason your site goes down.

Small changes

New prices, opening hours, photos or a line of text. Send them by email or WhatsApp and we make them; you never need to log in to anything.

SEO on every page

Keyword research before we write, then titles, headings, page structure, speed and internal links done properly. We submit your sitemap to Google and Bing and check the pages are being indexed.

Google Business Profile

Help setting up or tidying your profile, so your business shows correctly on Google Maps and in local results. See local SEO for what that involves.

(03)Three years of costs

A worked example. Change the numbers to your own quotes.

Pay monthly, one-off or DIY: three years compared

The fair way to compare a monthly website with a one-off build is the total over the time you'll keep it. Here is a simple brochure site over 36 months, using published UK price ranges.

A small business website over 36 months: what you pay in cash
One-off buildPay monthly (SEO Website)DIY builder
Up front£2,000£0£0
Hosting£540 (£15 a month)IncludedIncluded in the plan
Changes and updates£1,260 (one hour a month at £35)IncludedYour own time
SEO workNot includedIncludedYour own time
Monthly feesNone£3,564 (£99 × 36)£612 (£17 × 36)
Total over 36 months£3,800£3,564£612 plus your time

One-off build: £2,000 is the bottom of the £2,000–£7,000 that Startups.co.uk gives for a custom-built WordPress site1, with hosting at £15 a month (within its £5–£60 range1) and a freelancer's hour at £35 (freelance designers charge £25–£50 an hour2). DIY: Squarespace's Core plan at £17 a month, billed yearly3. Domain fees are left out of every column: they cost much the same whichever route you take.

Over three years the totals come out close. The difference is in what you get for the money: the monthly plan includes SEO work and changes every month, while the one-off build gets you a site and nothing after it unless you pay again.

Keep a one-off site for longer and it does get cheaper, year by year, provided nothing needs redesigning. A DIY builder is the cheapest in cash by far, and the right choice if you have the time and enjoy doing it; Wix's comparable Core plan is £16 a month, billed yearly4. (04)See it first

You see your site before you pay a penny

  1. You tell us about your business

A short call or a WhatsApp chat: what you do, where you work, who you want more of.

  2. We build your preview

A real working preview of your website or logo. Free, and no card needed.

  3. You ask for changes

We make a reasonable number of changes until it's right.

  4. You give it the nod. Then you pay.

We launch it and keep improving it every month under your plan.

Everything is agreed in writing. We send you a private link with a few quick questions about your business, then a written summary of what we'll build. When your preview is ready, you look at it on your own phone, ask for changes, and give it the nod on the same link. How it works has the detail.

(05)If you stop paying

The top worry with any monthly website. Here are our terms in plain English.

What happens if you stop paying

A monthly plan has to end cleanly, or it isn't worth signing. Ours ends when the period you've paid for ends. Your site comes down at that point, and everything that belongs to you goes with you.

Your domain

Registered in your name. We handle it for you: registering it, renewing it and pointing it at your site. The domain's own yearly fee is the one cost you pay separately. If you already have a domain, it stays where it is and we point it at your new site.

Your words, photos and logo

Everything you give us, and every word we write for your site, is yours to use anywhere, during the plan and after it.

Your customers' details

Enquiries that come through your site are yours. We only handle them to run the site for you, and you can have a copy whenever you ask.

Your accounts

Google Business Profile, Analytics, Search Console and social accounts are set up in your name, with us added as a manager.

Leaving

Tell us before your next payment is due and the plan ends when the period you've paid for ends. Within 14 days we send your words, photos and enquiries and help you move the domain.

The design and code

Your site runs on our own platform, so the code stays ours. If you'd like to take the design with you when you leave, ask and we'll quote for it.

(06)Cheaper monthly sites

You'll find monthly websites advertised for a good deal less than £99. This is what the difference usually buys.

What the difference buys

A preview before you commitAsk for it

Many cheaper plans start with a contract and a template you pick from a gallery. We design your site first and you see it working before you agree to anything.

SEO work that carries onThe biggest gap

A low monthly price usually covers hosting and little else. Ours includes keyword research and on-page SEO from day one, and the higher plans add new pages every month.

Pages written for your searches

A site built from a shared template tends to say what every other site on that template says. Search engines have little reason to show it above the others.

Terms you can leave on

Your domain, words, photos and enquiries are yours, and the exit is written down. Check that any provider you compare puts the same in writing.

Questions

(09)Questions

Building it yourself on a website builder. Squarespace's Core plan is £17 a month3 and Wix's Core plan is £16 a month4, both billed yearly. The catch is your time: you write the pages, take the photos, do the SEO and keep it all up to date yourself.
