How much does SEO cost in the UK? (2026)
SEO prices in the UK run from nothing to thousands a month. The useful question isn't the price, it's how many hours of real work it buys, and whether those hours go on the right things.
→The short answer
SEO in the UK typically costs £400–£1,500 a month from a freelancer and £1,200–£4,000 a month from an agency, according to Startups.co.uk, with one-off audits from about £400. Small local businesses can spend far less and still do the essentials. What matters most is how many hours of real work your budget buys.

What SEO costs in the UK
For a wider view, Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers worldwide. The most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, and the most common hourly rate $75 to $1002. Ahrefs sells SEO tools and the survey isn't UK-only, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a UK price list.
(02)What it buys
Divide the price by the hourly rate. That's the work you're paying for.
What each budget buys in hours
6.7 hours of work a month
Roughly what that many hours covers
- Everything above, plus one new or rewritten page a month
- Checking your business details match across the main directories
- A short monthly report
£500 a month sits at the low end of the freelancer range above1. £75 an hour is a placeholder at the bottom of the most common hourly band in Ahrefs' survey2: put in the rate you've actually been quoted. The list of what the hours cover is our own rough guide, not a promise.
Under 4 hours a month
Maintenance: keeping your Google profile current, replying to reviews, fixing errors Google reports. Enough to hold your ground in a quiet local market, rarely enough to climb.
4 to 10 hours
Maintenance plus one new or rewritten page a month and tidying your business listings. A sensible level for most small local businesses.
10 to 20 hours
Two to four new pages a month and some outreach for links. The level for competitive towns or trades, or a business serving several areas.
20 hours and up
A full content, technical and outreach programme, with competitor tracking. Usually more than a single-location small business needs.
(03)Contracts and lock-ins
Read the contract before the proposal
Minimum term
SEO takes months to show results, so a minimum term of a few months is reasonable. Twelve months or more, before you've seen any work, is a lot to commit to.
Notice period
How much notice you must give to stop, and whether you pay out the rest of the term if you leave early.
Who owns the work
The pages written for your site and the links built to it should stay yours if you leave. Check it's written down.
Your accounts
Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics should be in your name, with the provider added as a user, never the other way round.
What's reported
Ask to see a sample monthly report. It should list the work done, not just a graph going up.

It's worth it when the searches you want are ones your customers really make, and when the money buys actual work you can see each month. For a local business, the essentials (a strong Google profile, a page for each service, steady reviews) cost far less than the agency figures above.
Enough to buy the hours your market needs. A single-location business in a quiet market can do well on a few hours a month; a competitive trade in a big town needs more. Use the calculator above to turn a monthly figure into hours.
Because most of the cost is skilled time: research, writing, technical fixes and outreach, every month. Cheap packages usually cut the time, which is why they often rely on automated work that does little.
Yes, much of local SEO is within reach of any business owner: your Google profile, your reviews and a page for each service. Our local SEO checklist is a good place to start.
Usually months rather than weeks, and it depends on your market. Anyone who promises a date for a ranking is guessing. Ask instead what will be done each month and how you'll see it.
