Branding for small businesses
A brand is how people recognise you before they read your name: on a van, a polo shirt, an invoice or a WhatsApp chat. We design it as one joined-up identity, and you see it before you pay.

(02)The parts of a brand
Shown with the identity we designed for Repairs Plus.
What a brand identity is made of

Logo
The mark itself, in a main version and smaller or simpler versions for tight spaces. Our logo design page covers this part in depth.
Colour palette
Two to four colours with their exact codes for screen and print, and rules for which one goes where.
Typefaces
One or two fonts for headings and text, chosen to work on a sign and a phone, and free or licensed for your use.
Tone of voice
How the business sounds in writing: plain or playful, formal or friendly. A few lines of guidance stop every message sounding different.
Guidelines
The rules in one document, so a printer, a sign maker or a new member of staff can use the brand correctly. See the brand book we designed for Repairs Plus.
(03)Where it shows up
Most of a small business's brand is seen away from its website.
Where a small business brand appears
Vans and signs
Read at a distance and at speed. Needs bold shapes, high contrast and very few words.
Uniforms
Embroidered or printed, often in one colour on a dark fabric. Fine detail disappears.
Invoices, quotes and letters
Seen by customers who are deciding whether to pay you, or whether to hire you. Neat and consistent builds confidence.
Google Business Profile
Your logo, cover image and photos are often the first thing a new customer sees, before your website.
WhatsApp and social media
Your logo cropped into a small circle. A monogram or symbol usually works better there than a long name.
Packaging and labels
For product businesses: the brand customers hold in their hands, and photograph.
(04)Check your brand
Tick what's true today. Every untick is something to fix.

(05)How it works
No fixed timings: we agree a date for your first design in writing.
Our branding process
- A private link with questions about your business, your customers and brands you admire. Mostly yes or no.
- A written summary of what we'll design and which package, for you to agree.
- Your first design, shown on the things you'll actually use: van, shirt, card, profile picture.
- Changes, until it's right.
- Your nod, then payment.
- Your files and guidelines, organised by where each one goes.
Questions
(06)Questions
At its simplest, a logo with the files to use it everywhere. Larger packages add colours, typefaces, stationery, profile images and guidelines. Our three packages are listed above with everything each includes.
If anyone other than you will ever use your logo, a printer, a sign maker, an embroiderer or a new member of staff, yes. A few pages of rules saves paying to put mistakes right.
Yes, and it's the cheapest time to do it. Before you settle on a name, check it's free to use: our logo design page explains the trade mark basics.
Yes. Many businesses need a refresh rather than a rebrand. See rebranding for how we decide which, and how we keep what customers already recognise.
