Websites for restaurants, cafés and hotels

People decide where to eat and stay on their phones, often within a few minutes. The places that win are the ones whose menu, prices, hours and booking button are right there, and not inside a PDF.

The short answer

Good hospitality website design puts the menu, opening hours, location and booking or ordering button on the first screen of a phone, and lets you take bookings and orders directly instead of paying a commission on each one. We build websites for cafés, restaurants, pubs and hotels from £99 a month, and you see yours before you pay.

(01)How diners choose

From the Food Standards Agency's own survey.

What diners check before they choose

41%

of people surveyed considered the food hygiene rating when deciding where to eat out

35%

considered it when deciding where to order a takeaway

Source: Food Standards Agency

A good hygiene rating is worth showing where people decide, which is increasingly online. The Food Standards Agency provides digital badges so you can show your rating on your website; it's a legal requirement to display it at your premises in Wales and Northern Ireland, and voluntary in England2.

Beyond the rating, the questions are always the same: what's on the menu and what does it cost, are you open now, where exactly are you, can I book, and do you cater for my diet. A good hospitality site answers all five without a single tap into a PDF.

(03)Bookings and orders

Every booking or order through someone else costs something.

Taking bookings and orders: what each route costs

Ways to take orders and bookings, and what they cost
RouteWhat it costs youWho owns the customer
Delivery appsA commission on each order, set in your agreement with the app; one restaurant told Which? it paid 30% on orders over £25 and 33% below5The app
Online travel agencies, for roomsA commission on each booking, set in your agreementMostly the agency
Google's free hotel booking linksNothing: the link goes to your own website6You
Your own websiteCard fees, such as Stripe's 1.5% + 20p on standard UK cards7, plus any booking or ordering softwareYou

Few places can drop the apps and agencies entirely: they bring customers you'd never reach yourself. The aim is to make your own website the easiest place to book or order for everyone who already knows you, so the commission goes only on genuinely new customers.

(04)Hotels, B&Bs and pubs

Rooms: direct bookings and the agencies

Google's free booking links

Hotels can appear with a free link to book on their own website, on Google Search and Maps, alongside the paid listings6. Smaller properties can add rates through their Google Business Profile.

A reason to book direct

Breakfast included, a late check-out, a better room when it's free, or simply your own cancellation terms. Say it clearly on every room page.

Pubs with rooms

Three customers in one: drinkers, diners and overnight guests. Each needs its own route from the homepage, and its own page.

(05)A concept site

For a fictional café.

What a café's homepage can look like

ConceptA homepage for a fictional café: the menu, opening hours and booking are one tap away, and the hygiene rating sits where people look.

Questions

(08)Questions

If you want orders without the app's commission, yes. Regulars who already know you will happily order direct if it's easy, and every one of those orders costs you card fees rather than a commission.
