Small business website design

A website for a small business has one job: turn the people who find you into people who contact you. We design yours around that, and show it to you before you pay.

The short answer

Small business website design means building a site around how your customers choose: what you do, where you do it, proof you're good at it and an easy way to get in touch, all clear on a phone. We design yours from £99 a month with SEO included, and you see a free preview before paying.

(01)The pages you need

Most small businesses need five to ten pages to start. Each one has a job.

The pages a small business site needs, and what goes on each

HomeEvery site

What you do, where, and the quickest way to contact you, before anyone scrolls. Then your main services, a little proof and your contact details again at the bottom.

A page for each main serviceWhere search traffic lands

One page per service you want to be found for: "boiler servicing" and "bathroom fitting" are two pages, not two bullet points. Each says what's included, roughly what it costs, and answers the questions customers ask before they buy.

Your work

Photos of real jobs, finished products or happy customers, with a line on each. This is the page people check before they call.

About

Who's behind the business, how long you've been doing it, and anything that makes you safe to choose: qualifications, memberships, insurance.

Areas you coverOnly if it's true

For businesses that travel to customers, a page listing where you work. Separate pages for separate towns only when you have something different to say about each one.

Prices and questions

Even a "from" price or a typical range helps. It answers the first question most customers have, and saves you calls from people expecting something very different.

Contact

Phone, WhatsApp, email and a short form, plus your hours and the area you serve. Nothing that makes someone fill in ten fields to ask a question.

Privacy noticeRequired

If your site collects names, emails or phone numbers, UK data protection law expects you to explain what you do with them. We write it for you.

(02)The first screen

What a visitor sees before they scroll, on a phone.

The three-second test

People decide about a website very quickly. A study reported by Nature found that visitors formed a view of a homepage's visual appeal in about 50 milliseconds, and their snap judgement matched the one they gave after looking for longer1. Speed matters just as much: Google found that 53% of mobile visits were abandoned when a page took longer than three seconds to load2. And most people are looking on a phone: in 2025, smartphones accounted for around three-quarters of the time UK adults spent online3.

So we test every homepage we build against a simple question: in the first screen, on a phone, can a stranger tell what you do, where, why they should trust you, and how to contact you? Tick these off against your current site.

(04)Before you hire anyone

Ask these of any web designer, us included. Good ones answer them happily.

Questions to ask a web designer before you hire them

  1. Can I see a design for my business before I pay anything? If the answer is a deposit first, ask why.
  2. Whose name will the domain be registered in? It should be yours.
  3. What happens to my site if I stop paying you? Get the answer in writing, including how you get your words, photos and enquiries back.
  4. Who writes the words? The words do much of the selling. Find out whether they're written for your customers or left for you to fill in.
  5. What SEO is included, exactly? "SEO-friendly" means little. Ask what's done before launch and what's done each month after it.
  6. How do I make changes once it's live? And how much do they cost.
  7. Can I speak to someone whose site you built? Or at least see sites you've built that are live today.

(06)What we need from you

Sent as a private link with quick questions, most of them yes or no.

Your part, in writing

  • What you do, who your best customers are and where they are.
  • Your main services, in order of what you'd most like more of.
  • Your logo, if you have one. If you don't, we can design one.
  • Photos of your work, your premises or your team, sent from your phone.
  • Two or three websites you like, and what you like about them.
  • Your domain name, if you have one, and who it's registered with.

That's all. We write the pages from your answers and you read them in the preview. How it works shows the links we send.

(07)How it works

From first message to launch

  1. You tell us about your business

A short call or a WhatsApp chat: what you do, where you work, who you want more of.

  2. We build your preview

A real working preview of your website or logo. Free, and no card needed.

  3. You ask for changes

We make a reasonable number of changes until it's right.

  4. You give it the nod. Then you pay.

We launch it and keep improving it every month under your plan.

Questions

(09)Questions

It depends on who builds it. Startups.co.uk puts a basic site from a web designer at around £300–£1,000 and a bespoke one at £10,000 or more, before hosting and changes4. Ours is £99 a month with hosting, changes and SEO included and no build fee. Our UK website cost guide breaks it all down.
