Marketing a repair business or garage

Repair work arrives in two ways: something breaks, or something's due. Good marketing for a garage or repair business catches the first when it happens and owns the second before anyone else does.

The short answer

The best garage marketing ideas bring the same customers back on a schedule and catch new ones at the moment something breaks: MOT and service reminders, a seasonal plan for winter checks and summer air conditioning, pages that answer the faults people search for, honest offers, and a review asked for at every collection.

(01)What we learned

From the two repair websites we've built, both in South Africa.

Five things two repair websites taught us

People search for the fault, not the trade

"Washing machine not draining" and "gate motor beeping" come before "repair company near me". Pages that answer the fault honestly, with the safe checks a customer can do first, reach people at the moment they need help.

An offer and its condition belong together

Pink Ideas offers no call-out fee when it carries out the repair, and states the call-out charge for visits without a repair wherever the offer is explained. Clear terms beside the offer stop arguments on the doorstep.

Keep messages simple for customers

Pink Ideas found that booking reference numbers in pre-written WhatsApp messages confused customers, so we took them out. The office still sees a reference; the customer just sees their request.

Never throw away old web addresses

When we rebuilt Repairs Plus, each of the 166 working pages of the old site was rebuilt at exactly the same address. Pages that already bring calls are worth more than a tidier structure.

Technical pages come from the manual

Repairs Plus's model and fault pages were written from the manufacturers' own documents, not guesswork. A wrong instruction on a repair page costs trust you won't get back.

The full stories are in the Pink Ideas and Repairs Plus case studies.

(02)MOT and service reminders

The work that's due, every year, for every car.

MOT and service reminders that bring cars back

Remind them before the government does

DVSA's free service texts or emails drivers in Great Britain who sign up, a month before their MOT is due1. A reminder from your garage that arrives earlier, with a booking link, gets the booking first.

Explain the early-test rule

A car can have its MOT up to a month, minus a day, before the current one runs out and keep the same renewal date2. That's a simple reason for customers to book early, when you have space.

Pair the MOT with a service

Offer the service and the MOT on one visit, with one price and one day off the road.

Get the permission right

A reminder inviting someone to book is marketing, so by email or text it needs their consent or the soft opt-in: they gave you their details as a customer and were offered the chance to refuse, then and in every message since3. Ask when they first book; most say yes.

(03)A year of repair marketing

What breaks, and when people think about it.

A seasonal marketing plan for garages and repairers

What to promote through the year
GaragesAppliance and device repairers
January to MarchBatteries, tyres and wipers after the coldWashing machines and dryers under winter load; laptops and phones after Christmas
April to JuneAir conditioning checks before the warm weather; pre-holiday checksFridges and freezers before summer; garden and outdoor equipment
July to SeptemberAir conditioning in the heat; caravan and towbar work if you do itFridges and freezers in the heat; back-to-school laptops and tablets
October to DecemberWinter checks: battery, tyres, lights, antifreezeOvens and hobs before Christmas cooking; dishwashers under party load

A plan, not a rule: follow what your own bookings show. Two years of your job records will tell you more than any table.

(04)Honest offers

Offers bring people in; misleading ones bring complaints.

Offers that bring customers in without trouble

"Free" has to mean free

Describing something as free when the customer has to pay anything beyond the unavoidable cost of taking up the offer is banned outright under UK consumer law4. A "free winter check" can't come with a compulsory fee.

Fixed prices for common jobs

A published price for an MOT, a standard service, a screen replacement or a washing machine pump takes the fear out of booking.

Diagnostic fees, explained up front

If you charge to diagnose, say how much, and whether it comes off the repair if they go ahead.

Local business accounts

Taxi firms, delivery drivers, builders' vans and small fleets need their vehicles back fast. A simple account with priority booking and monthly invoicing is worth offering by name.

(05)Reviews

Reviews, at collection

The moment a customer drives away or takes their repaired phone is the moment to ask. Send your review link with the invoice, ask every customer rather than only the ones who seemed pleased, and never offer anything in return. Our guide to getting Google reviews has the templates and the rules.
